The UK Vein Clinic method: what and why

With varicose vein treatment through the NHS severely restricted, we looked for ways to give as many people as possible access to the best care and most effective treatment.

Our method guarantees a successful outcome to every varicose vein patient, we’ll conduct a second full duplex scan 6 weeks after treatment, to ensure the veins we’ve treated are closed.

For some residual varicose veins in the legs or feet, we might recommend the use of foam sclerotherapy. This involves using ultrasound to precisely guide the injection of foam to close the unhealthy vein. The foam causes the varicose vein to collapse, before it is naturally absorbed back into the body.

Vein disorders and how to treat them

Vein disease will affect up to 20 million people in the UK at some point in their lives.

Symptoms include varicose veins (large ‘trunk’ and smaller ‘reticular’ types), usually in the legs and feet, and thread or spider veins (‘teleangiectasia’ varicose veins).

Vein disease tends to get worse the older we are. But - along with any susceptibility we've inherited in our genes - lifestyle factors including our diet, how active we are, and whether we smoke can all play their part in determining how soon and how badly we're affected.

The latest advice from NICE and the European Society of Vascular Surgery is to get visible veins treated to avoid nasty complications in future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are veins that have swollen, twisted, and become lumpy. Varicose veins can affect any vein, but they are most commonly found in the legs.

Varicose veins are sometimes misunderstood as merely a cosmetic issue, but this is not en-tirely accurate. It's crucial to realise that vein disease can manifest itself in ways other than varicosities. Swelling, bleeding, skin injury, ulceration, and blood clots are all possible compli-cations (thrombosis). In the worst-case situation, this can result in a pulmonary embolism, which is potentially fatal.

These threats can be mitigated with early detection and timely action.

Seventy-three thousand people in the UK are thought to be affected by this disease. As a re-sult, the presence of veins on our legs should be taken seriously.

Why should I take varicose veins seriously?

It's important to understand that varicose veins are a visible symptom of vein disease. They could be a sign of more serious problems and should not be overlooked.

What causes varicose veins?

The key idea is that as people get older, the valves in their truncal veins start to malfunction. Rather than returning to the heart, blood returns down the leg to the foot. This is known as reflux, and it is this that leads to the buildup of pressure and the formation of varicose veins.

Valve failure can be seen as a series of events. The strain on the valve below is increased by a failing valve higher up the leg. This leads to further vein distention and, as a result, low-er-level valve failure.

When should I seek treatment for varicose veins?

As soon as evidence of vein disease becomes visible, the latest independent advice sug-gests a thorough duplex scan. This is true if you have tiny thread veins or larger truncal vari-cosities. The health of the deep vein system is assessed with this scan.

What are my treatment options?

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence and the European Society of Vascular Surgery have developed guidelines for the UK Vein Clinic.

Following the consultation and diagnostic scan, one of three treatment options would be rec-ommended where vein disease has been confirmed.

• Only foam sclerotherapy is used to treat superficial veins visible on the surface of the skin. Typically, one of three treatments are needed.

• Ablation of one or more truncal veins with radio-frequency. The venous system will be re-lieved of pressure as a result of this.

• Ablation and foam sclerotherapy in combination. Reflux in the truncal and superficial veins is handled. The first foam treatment takes place during the ablation appointment, with a follow-up treatment about 6 weeks later.

Our patients will return home and resume daily activities after a brief 15-minute recovery time. Compression stockings are provided to patients to help with recovery.

Is treatment painful?

Most patients agree that any discomfort caused by the operation is tolerable. Our procedures are defined as relatively painless, and you can resume your normal activities almost immedi-ately afterward.

Can I spread my payments out?

We can arrange for payments to be spread out over three, six, or twelve months, subject to approval. People who want to postpone payments for 30 days can take advantage of a 0% finance option. This will usually entail an initial deposit followed by a final payment 30 days lat-er.

Will my treatment be successful?

To achieve the best results, UK Vein Clinic employs the latest minimally invasive techniques. Our consultants are known for their experience all over the world. Thousands of patients treated by our clinical team have seen positive results using these techniques to treat vari-cose veins.

The truncal vein is closed with radio-frequency ablation to improve overall venous blood flow. Our blood returns to the heart through new pathways following treatment.

The result is a reduction in overall pressure in the venous system. The identifiable veins van-ish as a result of this. The only clinic in the UK that guarantees the successful closure of truncal veins is UK Vein Clinic.

Will I need to take time off work?

Minimally invasive treatments performed under local anaesthetic not only provide better re-sults but also minimise downtime. Following a short 15 minute period of recov-ery, our patients can return home and resume normal activity.

Why can’t I get varicose vein treatment on the NHS?

Alongside dentistry, ophthalmology and a range of therapies, the NHS has restricted funding to only the severest of cases. The expectation is that patients seeking to manage vein dis-ease early or to relieve symptoms will self pay or fund through private health insurance.

Our mission is to provide world-class varicose vein treatment at a price that works for most people. Offering a fixed price and peace of mind.

I have private medical insurance; will my treatment be covered?

Generally, private medical insurers will cover varicose vein procedures if patients are experi-encing symptoms such as pain & throbbing or skin discolouration. If the reason for treatment is purely cosmetic, then insurers are unlikely to cover treatment costs.

Is vein treatment during COVID19 allowed?

Yes, our covid secure policies follow guidelines set out by the care quality commission to en-sure our patients are safe. All of our clinicians have received either the Astra Zenica or Pfizer vaccines.
